Book 1 of the Grime Fighter Mysteries

Her best friend missing, every cell in Dani Foster's body screams something is wrong.

Crime scene cleaning is the perfect job for neat-nick Dani Foster. But her orders to maintain a low profile and stay out of trouble mean little when her friend goes missing. Suspicions point to the handsome crime scene specialist, Jay Hunter, but he's also the only person willing to help Dani. Dare she trust him even when lies seem to surround him?

Dani amuses Jay. Her penchant for speaking and acting without regard to the consequences land her in the funniest situations. But her latest moves have thrust her into serious danger. As he learns more about her circumstances, her risk rises until her very life is on the line. He has no time or inclination for romance, but this girl needs him and she seems to have no one else. How can he turn his back?

This is the first episode of the Grime Fighters series set in Dallas, Texas. Dani's trouble and Jay's attraction are only just beginning!

Discuss GRIME BEAT With Me!

  1. As the story opens, Dani is desperate to find some hint of where her friend, Tasha, has gone. I’m reminded of the truth in Proverbs 18:24. I bet you can think of specific people who have shown this type of loyalty in your life. What are some things they have done to gain them this honored opinion?

  2. What are some actions you’ve taken that prove your commitment or dedication to a friend?

  3. In most translations of this verse, it notes that there is “a” friend who sticks closer than a brother. John 15:14-15 gives more insight on this. How have you seen this relationship in your own life?

  4. Dani has trouble trusting the police. She feels, especially after discovering the source of the item she received in her package, that someone near Jay, if not Jay himself, isn’t honest. What makes trust such an integral part in any relationship?

  5. Micah 7:1-7 speaks to the subject of trust rather negatively. But realistically, anyone can betray. Have you ever been the victim of betrayal? Have you ever been the perpetrator of one? What initiated the treachery and what was the result? How did the relationship survive, if it did?

  6. Dani and Jay have a discussion about trust.

  7. Dani lowered her chin. “People are people, whether cops, clergy, or businessmen. They don’t become all-perfect super heroes just because they take on a job.”

  8. “You sound a little cynical.” He rubbed her shoulders.

  9. “I don’t put people on pedestals. Everyone blows it from time to time.” Especially her.

  10. Is Dani right? Can good people—folks with pure motives, sincerity, and integrity—actually fall that far and become betrayers? Or are those who commit betrayal secretly bad people? Jeremiah 9 speaks to this.

  11. Psalm 91:2, 62:8, 37:3, 9:10, 118:9, 37:5, and Proverbs 3:5 all say basically the same thing. What is that? How should that make you feel about people who lie about you, strike out against you, or betray you?

  12. The American proverb, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me,” basically says that people only have one chance. Once they err, they should never be trusted again. Does this work with grace? Use Mark 11:25-26, Matthew 6:12-15, Luke 11:4, Matthew 18:35, 21-22, 2 Corinthians 2:7, and Luke 23:34 to help you answer.

  13. Dani attempts to read through II Timothy 1 to prepare for the Bible study that she wants to do. But she stumbles on verse 7. I used the KJV for this verse because of its word choice: “and of a sound mind.” That speaks to me of keeping my mind focused, clear, and my thoughts accurate. Check out the different translations on Bible Hub. Which of the translations do you prefer of this verse? How does it speak to your spirit?

  14. Just for fun. Psychology, analyzing characters more than real people, is a hobby. What type of man is Jay? What are his weaknesses and strengths? In what areas are you hoping that he grows? (Feel free to leave your answers on my discussion page at Marji Laine.com. I’ll get an automatic email, and I’d love to have a discussion with you!)

  15. But don’t leave Dani hanging. What type of woman is she? What are her weaknesses and strengths? And how do you hope she’ll grow. (Again, share your thoughts!)

  16. Finally, do Dani and Jay make a good couple? Is there a strong chance for lasting love, or do you look at their interaction and think, “I give it six months”? (Oh, yes! I’ve done that before with books and movies!)
